Marketing in medicine is always a touchy issue because there i
s nothing the average person holds more dear than their health and treating it like a commodity can sometimes be disheartening. Any doctor will tell you that marketing is just a way of life and if they don’t do it then they won’t have a successful practice. In the past few years a new way for doctors to market has shown up in the form of social networking, and nothing appears to embody this more than Twitter.
Twitter, the famous micro-blogging site, gives doctors a whole new way to connect with patients or would-be clients. Rather than billboards or press-releases, doctors now have a direct line of communication to their patients. I’ve seen first hand how powerful of a marketing tool Twitter can be: doctors simply open a line of communication with their patients, perhaps thanking them for their visit, and then the process begins. The doctor then begins to follow friends of the patient on twitter, they inquire why the doctor is following and he explains the connection. An instant referral from a trusted source, this is the essence of Twitter marketing. This direct line of communication brings doctors and patients together like never before and will perhaps lead towards a stronger degree of connectivity in the future. A properly used Twitter account can be the most powerful tool in a medical professionals marketing strategy.
